A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has remanded Adeniyi Mathew Adeyemi, the alleged Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The court also ordered an accelerated hearing of the criminal case against Adeyemi and adjourned proceedings until October 12 for hearing of his bail application.
Adeyemi is facing an eight-count charge, marked FHC/ABJ/CR/562/2025, filed by the Nigeria Police Force over alleged forgery, impersonation and related offences.
The charges also name two other defendants identified in the court documents as “Femi Surname Unknown” and “Anu Surname Unknown.”
The case followed allegations that Adeyemi presented himself as the Director-General of the Presidential Foreign Investment Promotion Council, an agency the authorities have described as non-existent.
Among the allegations in the charge is that Adeyemi forged an appointment letter purportedly issued by President Bola Tinubu and signed by the President’s Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. The prosecution also alleged that he forged other documents purportedly emanating from the State House.
The police had earlier obtained a bench warrant for Adeyemi’s arrest after he failed to appear for his scheduled arraignment in July. He was subsequently arrested in Osun State and remained in police custody.
Adeyemi has denied the allegations and maintained that the council exists.
His detention had also featured in a separate fundamental rights suit in which the Federal High Court ordered that he be given unhindered access to his lawyers, while declining at the time to order his release from custody.
The latest order for accelerated hearing is expected to move the criminal proceedings forward, while the court will consider Adeyemi’s bail application on October 12.
