Former Subin MP, Eugene Boakye Antwi has said the economic difficulties that affected the party’s electoral fortunes in 2024 do not remove the responsibility of the General Secretary to prepare the NPP for a general election.
Mr Antwi acknowledged that the economy can influence how voters assess a government but argued that the General Secretary has specific responsibilities that go beyond the national economic situation.
He compared the 2024 situation with the 2020 election, when the NPP also faced economic difficulties but lost fewer parliamentary seats.
“The economy was worse in 2020 when John Boadu lost 32 seats and the party looked at that,” he said on Joy News.
Mr Antwi said the General Secretary’s responsibility includes preparing the party, maintaining discipline and unity, and serving as a link between different parts of the organisation.
“But every system, don’t worry now, the General Secretary must prepare the party for an election,” he said.
“You must have a very disciplined, united party. The General Secretary must be an inspirational voice of the party.”
He said the position also connects the party’s national leadership to its parliamentary caucus and presidential candidate.
“The General Secretary forms a bridge between the party and members of Parliament as well as a flag bearer because you are the day-to-day administrator of the party,” he said.
Mr Antwi therefore argued that the General Secretary should accept responsibility for electoral performance, particularly in areas directly connected to party organisation and parliamentary contests.
“Parliamentary primaries, that’s the forte of the General Secretary. If you should take a credit, so why can’t you lose seats? You don’t want to take the credit,” he said.
The NPP is preparing for its October 3, 2026 national executive elections, which include the contest for General Secretary.
