Business leaders and technology experts have called on organisations to adopt agentic artificial intelligence responsibly, warning that increasingly autonomous AI systems require robust governance and human oversight.

The experts spoke during a webinar organised by the EY Nigeria Alumni Association as part of the EY Global Alumni Week.

Speaking at the event, EY West Africa Partner and Digital Transformation Services Leader, Wilfred Mamah, described agentic AI as a significant evolution from conventional software tools to systems capable of planning tasks, using digital tools and executing approved actions.

He said organisations should view agentic AI as the delegation of clearly defined decision-making responsibilities rather than simply the deployment of advanced chatbots.

Senior Manager, Technology Consulting at EY, Tomiwa Adefokun, stressed that the level of autonomy granted to AI systems should depend on the degree of risk associated with their actions.

“The future is not autonomous AI operating without people. It is responsible human-agent collaboration where technology provides speed and scale while people provide purpose, judgement and accountability,” he said.

The experts identified banking, insurance and public services as areas where agentic AI could significantly improve operational efficiency.
