Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Nigeria after leading the country’s delegation to the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States, on behalf of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Shettima departed Abuja on September 20 following his designation by President Tinubu to represent Nigeria at the annual gathering of world leaders and policymakers.

During the high-level event, the Vice President delivered Nigeria’s national statement at the General Debate, where he restated the country’s longstanding position on the reform of the United Nations Security Council. He called for permanent African representation on the council, equitable access to global financing, increased climate support for developing nations, and strengthened multilateral cooperation.

The Vice President also participated in the Third High-Level Roundtable of the Africa Minerals Strategy Group, where Nigeria advocated greater value addition within Africa’s mineral sector. Speaking on behalf of President Tinubu, Shettima urged African countries to move beyond the export of raw minerals by investing in local processing, manufacturing, and industrial development.

At a high-level education financing event jointly hosted by Nigeria and Italy, the Vice President reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to education as a key driver of human capital development, productivity, and economic growth. He also expressed support for the Global Partnership for Education’s $5 billion financing campaign aimed at expanding access to quality education worldwide.

As part of his engagements in New York, Shettima held discussions with members of the Nigerian diaspora, emphasizing the critical role of their investments, expertise, innovation, and international networks in advancing national development.

The Vice President also met with the new leadership of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Commission and held talks with the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed, on issues of mutual interest.

Throughout the various engagements, Shettima promoted Nigeria’s positions on development financing, regional integration, economic cooperation, technology, peace, and security, while reiterating President Tinubu’s call for a more inclusive, representative, and equitable global order.

His participation at the UNGA underscored Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening international partnerships and advancing African interests on the global stage.
